Alligator Mouth

Learning the ‘greater than’ and ‘less than’ symbols can get a bit confusing. Here is an easy trick to guide your child though it.

First, looking at the symbols for greater than and less than, > <, you can visually see how it looks like an alligator mouth.

When trying to decide what symbol to use on the greater number, remember that the alligator’s mouth is always open to eat the larger food:

5 > 3 = 5 is greater than 3.

When deciding what symbol belongs with the smaller number, remember than the alligator is full and does not want the food:

3 < 5 = 3 is less than 5

There you have it parents, an easy and fun way to remember the greater than and less than symbols.
