You can’t have a typical **math** class without finding at least one student daydreaming, fidgeting, or doodling in their notebooks, impatiently waiting for the class to be over. At some point, you’ve most likely heard kids complain saying “I’m never going to use this stuff ever again. Why do I have to learn it?” It’s easy to sympathize with a math-hating child forced to graph linear equations against his will, but like it or not, cool math skills painfully acquired in school usually prove to be crucial in life. Here are some of the ways in which math is important for kids:

1. A child who tries to solve a math problem quickly learns that he needs to follow a specific series of steps in an orderly manner without making a single error. If there is an error, he may have to start over until he corrects the erroneous step and moves on to the next one. In the same way, a lot of the stuff we consistently do in our daily lives can be improved and corrected for maximum efficiency and productivity. For instance, if your goal is to reach school on time, you must wake up on time, get dressed for school, have breakfast and commute to school. This is a series of steps, each of which must be accomplished smoothly, to ensure that you are not late for school. By missing out on one step or by doing it incorrectly, your entire day could go wrong.

2. **Math** equips you with problem-solving skills that help you analyze real life situations and arrive at logical solutions based on the given data. This is particularly true for the much-disliked word problems that are an intrinsic part of any comprehensive math course. If you think word problems are all theory and have no practical value, you couldn’t be more wrong. While good problem solving skills can be acquired through other disciplines too, solving mathematical word problems on a regular basis is a good way to polish problem solving skills and apply them directly to your daily life.

3. **Math** teaches us many significant skills that we use every single day without even realizing it. For instance, a working knowledge of fractions is useful while interpreting road signs that tell us the distance we must cover to reach a destination. Learning to tell time can be difficult if you’re not good with numbers. Calculating bills, planning budgets and balancing checkbooks all require good arithmetic skills. You’d find it hard to understand nutrition labels if you are puzzled by percentages. Even a seemingly simple task like hanging a picture on a wall requires the use of geometric skills. In fact, the lack of **math** skills could seriously hamper your efficiency as you go about your daily life.
